Life Insurance Height Weight Chart: Your 2026 Guide
Bottom Line. A life insurance height weight chart is the tool carriers use to assign your rating class based on your body build. Every company draws different lines on that chart, which means one insurer may offer you Preferred rates while another rates you Standard. Shopping across carriers is the single best way to get a fair price.
Why Your Height and Weight Matter So Much
When you apply for life insurance, one of the first things a carrier evaluates is your build. That means your height measured against your weight. Insurers use internal charts to decide whether your build falls within acceptable ranges for their best rating classes or whether you will be placed in a higher cost tier.
Here is why this matters. Two people who are the same age, same gender, and in equally good health can receive very different quotes simply because one carrier’s chart is more generous at a particular height and weight combination. We see this play out regularly when we shop policies for our clients.
How Height Weight Charts Actually Work
Every life insurance company maintains its own version of a height weight chart. These charts set maximum weight limits for each height at every rating class. If you weigh more than the limit for Preferred Plus at your height, you drop to Preferred. If you exceed that limit, you move to Standard Plus, then Standard, and so on.
Here is a general example of how ranges might look for a male applicant who stands 5 foot 10.
- Preferred Plus may allow up to roughly 209 pounds
- Preferred may allow up to roughly 227 pounds
- Standard Plus may allow up to roughly 250 pounds
- Standard may allow up to roughly 272 pounds
These numbers are approximations and vary widely between companies. Some carriers are significantly more lenient, especially for applicants who carry extra weight but have otherwise excellent lab results and health history.
For female applicants, the thresholds are generally a bit lower at the same height. A woman at 5 foot 6 might see Preferred Plus cutoffs around 170 pounds with some carriers and closer to 155 with others.
The key takeaway is that no single chart applies to everyone. Each carrier builds these tables differently based on their own claims data and risk tolerance.
What Happens If You Exceed the Chart Limits
If your weight exceeds a carrier’s Standard limit for your height, you move into what the industry calls table ratings. Table ratings run from Table 1 through Table 16, and each table adds roughly 25% to your base premium. A Table 2 rating means you pay 50% more than Standard. A Table 4 means you pay 100% more.
This is where shopping across multiple carriers becomes incredibly valuable. We regularly work with clients who receive a Table 2 rating from one company and a Standard rating from another. That gap can mean thousands of dollars in savings over the life of a policy.
Some carriers also take a more holistic view of your health. If your weight is above chart limits but your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and other labs all come back in excellent ranges, certain companies will make exceptions or offer credits that bring your rating down.
Other Factors That Work Alongside Your Build
Your height and weight chart placement does not exist in a vacuum. Carriers look at your full picture, and several other factors weigh heavily on your final rate.
Age is the single biggest pricing factor. Rates increase approximately 8% to 10% for every year you wait, which means locking in coverage sooner almost always saves money.
Tobacco use is the second largest factor. Smokers typically pay two to four times more than nonsmokers for the same coverage amount.
Current health conditions matter as well. A well controlled condition like managed high blood pressure may barely affect your rate with the right carrier, while the same condition uncontrolled could push you into table ratings.
Family history plays a role too. If a parent or sibling had heart disease or cancer before age 60, some carriers will factor that into your classification.
Gender influences pricing because women statistically live longer and generally pay lower premiums at every rating class.
How We Help Clients Find the Right Fit
Insurance By Heroes was founded by a former first responder and military spouse. Every member of our team comes from a background in public service. That experience taught us something that applies directly to life insurance. You protect people by doing thorough work, not by cutting corners.
Because we are an independent agency, we are not locked into any single carrier. We shop your application across many different companies, each with its own height weight chart and underwriting guidelines. This means we can match your specific build, health profile, and budget with the carrier most likely to offer you the best rating class.
When we help clients who are concerned about their weight affecting their rates, we start by reviewing the height weight charts from multiple carriers side by side. We know which companies are more lenient for certain body types and which ones reward strong lab results even when weight is above typical limits. This kind of carrier knowledge is what separates a quick online quote from a properly shopped policy.
No Exam Options for Build Concerns
If you are worried about a medical exam highlighting your weight, there are alternatives worth considering.
Accelerated underwriting programs use data from prescription databases, motor vehicle records, and other electronic sources to make a decision without a physical exam. Some of these programs have more generous build allowances than traditional underwriting.
Simplified issue policies ask a limited set of health questions and skip the exam entirely. These tend to cost more than fully underwritten policies, but they can be a smart choice if your build would result in table ratings through the traditional process.
Guaranteed issue policies require no health questions and no exam at all. These carry the highest premiums and typically come with a graded benefit period during the first two to three years. They exist as a last resort option for applicants who cannot qualify any other way.
The tradeoff is straightforward. The less underwriting a policy requires, the more it will cost. But sometimes paying a bit more for a simplified issue policy beats paying table rated premiums on a fully underwritten one. We run the numbers both ways for every client to see which path makes the most financial sense.
Steps You Can Take Before Applying
If your weight currently puts you outside the preferred ranges, you have options beyond just accepting higher rates.
Losing even 10 to 15 pounds can sometimes shift you into a better rating class. If you are close to a threshold, it may be worth waiting a few months to apply. Most carriers want to see your current weight stable for at least 12 months before giving you credit for the loss.
Getting your labs in top shape helps as well. Strong cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure numbers can sometimes convince an underwriter to overlook a few extra pounds.
If you are on a weight loss medication and have been showing steady progress, some carriers are beginning to factor that positively into their decisions. The underwriting landscape around these medications is evolving quickly in 2026, and we stay on top of those changes for our clients.
Your Next Step
The most important thing to understand about life insurance height weight charts is that they are not universal. The chart that one company uses could cost you hundreds of dollars more per year than another company’s chart. You deserve to know which carrier gives you the best deal for your specific build.
Request a free quote through Insurance By Heroes today. We will compare your height and weight against charts from many different carriers and show you exactly where you qualify for the best rates. Our team brings the same dedication to protecting your family that we once brought to protecting our communities. Let us put that service first mentality to work for you.
