Understanding Standard Plus Life Insurance in 2026

Bottom Line. Understanding Standard Plus life insurance means knowing where you fall in the rating system and how it affects your premiums. This classification sits just above average, offering better rates than Standard while leaving room to improve with the right carrier match.

You applied for life insurance expecting great rates. Then the offer came back labeled “Standard Plus.” Now you are wondering what that means for your wallet and whether you can do better. You are not stuck, and this rating is more common than most people realize.

What Does Standard Plus Actually Mean?

Every life insurance carrier groups applicants into rating classes based on health and lifestyle. Think of it like a tier system. The healthier you are, the lower your premiums. Standard Plus falls right in the middle of the pack, above Standard (average) and below Preferred.

People who land in the Standard Plus category are generally in good health but may have one or two factors keeping them from a higher class. That could be mildly elevated cholesterol, a slightly above average build, a family history of heart disease, or a combination of small things that add up.

The good news? Standard Plus rates are still very competitive. You are paying less than the average applicant, and depending on the carrier, sometimes significantly less.

The Rating Class Ladder

Most carriers use a system that looks something like this.

  • Preferred Plus (or Elite) is the best available rate. This goes to applicants with excellent health, no tobacco use, a clean family history, and an ideal build. Very few people qualify here.
  • Preferred is for applicants in very good health who may have one minor issue, such as a slightly elevated blood pressure reading that is well controlled.
  • Standard Plus is for people in good overall health who have a couple of manageable factors. You are healthier than average but do not quite meet the Preferred threshold.
  • Standard is considered average. Most healthy adults without major conditions qualify here at minimum.
  • Table Ratings apply to applicants with more significant health concerns. Each table level (1 through 16) adds roughly 25% to the Standard rate.

Here is the part that matters most. Every carrier draws its own lines between these classes. One company’s Standard Plus might be another company’s Preferred. The criteria are not identical across the industry, and that difference can save you real money.

What Factors Pushed You Into Standard Plus?

If you received a Standard Plus rating, one or more of these factors likely played a role.

Age is the single biggest driver of life insurance pricing. Rates typically increase about 8% to 10% for every year you wait. A 35 year old and a 45 year old in identical health will see dramatically different premiums.

Health conditions and control levels matter a great deal. Mildly elevated cholesterol that you manage with diet might place you at Standard Plus with one carrier but Preferred with another. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI all factor in.

Tobacco use creates the largest rate gap of any single factor. Smokers typically pay two to four times more than nonsmokers. If you quit recently, some carriers will offer nonsmoker rates after just 12 months while others require three to five years.

Build (height and weight) is evaluated against each carrier’s own chart. If your weight is slightly outside one company’s guidelines, another company with more generous charts might rate you more favorably.

Family history of heart disease or cancer in parents or siblings before age 60 can affect your classification. Some carriers weigh this more heavily than others.

Gender also plays a role. Women statistically live longer and generally receive lower rates than men of the same age and health profile.

How the Underwriting Process Works

When you apply for life insurance, the carrier builds a complete picture of your health and risk. Knowing what they look at can help you prepare.

The process typically starts with a detailed application covering your medical history, lifestyle, and family health background. From there, the carrier runs several checks behind the scenes. They review the MIB database (which tracks previous insurance applications), check prescription drug databases to verify medication history, and pull motor vehicle records.

For many policies, a brief medical exam is part of the process. A licensed examiner comes to your home or office, takes basic measurements, collects blood and urine samples, and records your blood pressure. This usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

In more complex cases, the carrier may request your actual medical records (called APS reports) from your doctors. This can add time to the process but gives the underwriter a fuller picture that sometimes works in your favor.

The entire process usually takes two to six weeks from application to offer, though some cases move faster.

Can You Get a Better Rating?

Absolutely. There are several paths forward.

Shop with multiple carriers. This is the single most effective strategy. Because every company draws its class lines differently, the same health profile can qualify for Standard Plus at one carrier and Preferred at another. The rate difference between those two classes can be 15% to 25% or more.

This is where working with an independent agency makes a real difference. At Insurance By Heroes, we were founded by a former first responder and military spouse, and every member of our team comes from a background in public service. That service first mindset means we work for you, not for any single insurance company. Because we are independent, we compare offers from many different carriers to find the one that rates your specific profile most favorably.

Consider the timing. If you have a health factor that is improving (you recently lost weight, started medication for blood pressure, or quit tobacco), waiting a few months for updated labs could bump you into a higher class. That said, delaying too long works against you because age increases never stop.

Improve what you can control. Cholesterol, blood pressure, weight, and fitness levels all influence your rating. Even modest improvements in these areas can shift you up a class with the right carrier.

Be thorough and honest on your application. Omitting information does not help. Underwriters will find it through prescription checks, medical records, and the MIB database. Being upfront allows your agent to match you with a carrier that views your specific situation most favorably from the start.

No Exam Options and How They Compare

If the traditional underwriting process feels like too much, you have alternatives.

Accelerated underwriting uses data (prescription history, credit data, and other electronic records) to make a decision without a medical exam. Many carriers now offer this for healthy applicants seeking moderate coverage amounts. You may still qualify for Standard Plus or better through this path.

Simplified issue policies ask a limited set of health questions with no exam required. These are faster to approve (often within days) but typically cost more than fully underwritten policies because the carrier has less information to work with.

Guaranteed issue policies require no health questions at all. Anyone who applies is accepted. However, these carry the highest premiums and usually come with a graded death benefit in the first two to three years.

The tradeoff is straightforward. The more information you provide, the better your rate is likely to be. If you are in reasonably good health, a fully underwritten policy (even with the exam) almost always delivers the best value.

Why the Right Agent Matters

Life insurance pricing is not one size fits all. Two carriers can look at the exact same person and offer rates that differ by hundreds of dollars per year. The difference comes down to how each company weighs individual factors, and knowing those tendencies is something that only comes with experience.

Our team at Insurance By Heroes brings that experience along with a genuine commitment to finding you the best fit. With backgrounds rooted in public service, we treat every client the way we would want our own families treated. We believe protecting the people you love is an act of duty, and we consider it a privilege to help you do it right.

Because we are not tied to any single carrier, we shop your profile across many different companies. That independent advantage means we can often find a carrier where your Standard Plus rating becomes a Preferred offer, saving you money every single month for the life of your policy.
