Corebridge Life Insurance Overview (Formerly AIG): 2026

American International Group, better known as AIG, once used its name across a large U.S. life and retirement business. That business now operates under the Corebridge Financial brand. If you are shopping for a new policy in 2026, the current company, product name, issuing insurer, and state availability matter more than the older AIG label. And if you are arranging an SBA loan for your business, we explain how to cover that loan in our SBA Loan Life Insurance guide.

Reviewed September 1, 2026. This overview explains the AIG-to-Corebridge transition, the types of life insurance Corebridge currently describes, and what to compare before applying. It is educational, not a promise that every product is available in every state or through every agency.

What changed from AIG Life & Retirement to Corebridge?

Corebridge Financial is the former AIG Life & Retirement business. Corebridge completed its initial public offering in 2022, and AIG deconsolidated Corebridge on June 9, 2024. AIG reported that it no longer had significant influence over Corebridge as of March 31, 2026. Corebridge is a separate public company, while AIG continues to operate other insurance businesses.

Corebridge and Equitable stockholders approved a proposed merger in July 2026. The transaction had not closed as of this review and remained subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. It should not be described as a completed combination.

That distinction is important for consumers. A current life insurance policy marketed under the Corebridge name is issued by the insurance company identified in the contract. Corebridge’s legal notice says Corebridge is a marketing name and that products are written or provided by its subsidiaries or affiliates.

Corebridge’s current consumer materials identify American General Life Insurance Company as the issuer outside New York and The United States Life Insurance Company in the City of New York as the issuer in New York. American General does not solicit, issue, or deliver policies in New York. An insurer’s license in a state does not guarantee that a particular product, form, feature, or distribution channel is available there. The policy contract controls.

What life insurance does Corebridge offer?

Corebridge currently organizes its consumer life insurance offerings into three broad groups:

  • Term life insurance for coverage during a defined period.
  • Permanent life insurance for lifelong coverage and potential cash value.
  • Final expense life insurance for smaller permanent policies intended to help with end-of-life bills.

Those categories describe different needs. A family replacing income for 20 years may need a very different policy from someone seeking a modest amount of permanent coverage for funeral costs. Do not compare policies on the company name alone. If you want another major carrier to weigh, see our MetLife Insurance reviews and rates.

Corebridge term life insurance

Term life insurance provides a death benefit during a selected coverage period. Term policies are generally less expensive than permanent insurance and typically do not build cash value. Confirm the terms of the specific policy.

Corebridge says its current term offering includes 18 term-period choices. Depending on the policy, coverage may be renewable or convertible to permanent insurance when the original term ends. Conversion rules, deadlines, maximum ages, and available permanent products are contract-specific, so they should be reviewed before purchase.

Corebridge also says some applications may receive an underwriting decision and policy delivery within 24 to 48 hours. That is not a guarantee for every applicant, product, or distribution channel, and it is not an Insurance By Heroes service-level promise. Age, health history, requested coverage, available records, and the need for an exam can all affect timing and final pricing.

When term life may fit

  • Replacing income while children or other dependents rely on you.
  • Covering a mortgage or other debt for a known period.
  • Buying a larger death benefit on a limited budget.
  • Protecting a business obligation or key earning years.

The important comparison points are the level-premium period, conversion rights, available riders, underwriting class, and the final approved premium. A preliminary quote is not the same as an approved offer.

Corebridge permanent life insurance

Permanent life insurance is designed to remain in force for life when policy requirements are met. It can also build cash value. Corebridge offers permanent coverage, including universal and indexed universal life solutions through its issuing companies. If you are comparing permanent coverage across carriers, we also publish MassMutual Life Insurance reviews and rates.

Permanent policies require more scrutiny than a simple price comparison. Premium flexibility, lapse protection, policy charges, crediting methods, illustrated values, guaranteed values, and access to cash value can differ substantially.

An indexed universal life policy is not a direct investment in a stock-market index. Interest crediting is based partly on an index and is limited by the policy’s terms. Charges can reduce policy value even when the credited rate is not negative. Review both the guaranteed and non-guaranteed columns of any illustration.

Corebridge announced updates to its Max Accumulator+ III indexed universal life product on June 29, 2026. That announcement identifies American General Life Insurance Company as issuer outside New York and US Life as issuer in New York. It says the Nasdaq-100 strategy is unavailable in California and New York, and that New York policies offer only two index strategies. Features remain subject to the actual policy, product form, state approval, and distribution channel.

Corebridge final expense life insurance

Final expense insurance is permanent life insurance with a smaller death benefit. It is generally intended to help beneficiaries with funeral costs, medical bills, credit cards, and other end-of-life expenses.

Corebridge currently markets final expense whole life coverage for seniors. The official page says life insurance is issued by American General Life Insurance Company except in New York, where it is issued by US Life. The page also warns that products and features may not be available in every state. If you are also looking at policies aimed at older adults, see our Kemper Senior Solutions Life Insurance review.

Before choosing final expense coverage, compare:

  • Whether the full death benefit is available immediately or after a graded period.
  • Whether the application asks health questions.
  • The maximum coverage amount.
  • Premium guarantees and the age at which coverage ends, if applicable.
  • The total premium paid over a realistic life expectancy.

Financial strength ratings

Ratings should be checked for the issuing insurance company, not just the marketing brand. Corebridge’s table dated April 8, 2026 listed insurer financial-strength ratings for American General Life and US Life at A+ from Standard & Poor’s with CreditWatch Negative, A2 from Moody’s with a Stable outlook, A from AM Best under review with developing implications, and A+ from Fitch with a Positive outlook.

These are ratings of the issuing insurers’ financial strength, not ratings of Corebridge corporate debt. They are opinions, not guarantees of claims payment, policy performance, investment results, or suitability. Ratings and their outlooks can change and should be rechecked before purchase.

What to compare before applying

A recognizable company name is only one part of the decision. Compare the actual contract and approved offer across these areas:

  • Issuing company: Identify the insurer legally responsible for the policy.
  • Coverage period: Confirm whether the policy is term or permanent and when guarantees end.
  • Premium structure: Determine whether premiums are level, flexible, or subject to change.
  • Underwriting: A carrier that prices one medical history favorably may price another very differently.
  • Conversion rights: For term coverage, review deadlines, ages, and available conversion products.
  • Living benefits and riders: Read the definitions, triggers, costs, and effect on the death benefit.
  • Guaranteed values: For permanent insurance, separate guarantees from illustrated assumptions.

How Insurance By Heroes approaches the comparison

Insurance By Heroes is the trade name of Joshua Wahls, a licensed independent insurance producer. Insurance By Heroes is not an insurer, underwriter, or claims payer, is not available in New York, and does not represent the entire insurance market. We compare policies only from carriers the applicable agency and producer are licensed, appointed, and product-authorized to represent for the applicant’s state and case.

Carrier and product availability can change, so this page does not establish that a Corebridge-issued policy is available through us. If it is available, it can be compared with other available options that may fit the stated needs. If it is not available through us, we can compare only alternatives from companies we are authorized to represent. Insurance By Heroes may receive commission compensation if a policy is purchased through us. Quotes are estimates and are not binding until the issuing insurer approves and issues coverage.

Bottom line

Consumers searching for the former AIG Life & Retirement business may encounter Corebridge Financial and its issuing companies. That does not mean all legacy AIG policies or AIG’s current general-insurance operations are Corebridge. For a new life insurance purchase, the issuing company, product, state availability, channel, underwriting outcome, and policy guarantees all matter.

Use the current Corebridge documents and the actual policy contract rather than relying on older AIG marketing. Then compare the approved offer against other carriers that can realistically serve your situation. Our Kemper Life Insurance review applies the same comparison approach to another carrier name you may encounter.
