How Does a Life Insurance Build Chart Work in 2026?

Bottom Line. A life insurance build chart is a table that carriers use to match your height and weight to a rating class, directly affecting what you pay for coverage. Every carrier uses its own version of this chart, so the same person can qualify for very different rates depending on where they apply.

Your Height and Weight Matter More Than You Think

When you apply for life insurance, one of the first things a carrier evaluates is your “build,” which simply means the relationship between your height and weight. Insurers have studied millions of policyholders over decades, and they know that certain height and weight combinations correlate with longer or shorter life expectancy. That data gets distilled into a document called a build chart.

Think of a build chart as a grid. Your height runs down one side. Weight ranges run across the top. Where your numbers intersect determines which rating class you may qualify for. Land in a favorable range, and you could earn Preferred Plus or Preferred rates. Fall outside those ranges, and you might be placed into Standard or even a table rating, where each table adds roughly 25% to the base premium.

Here is the part most people miss. There is no single universal build chart. Every carrier creates its own version based on their own claims experience and risk appetite. One carrier might allow up to 230 pounds for a 5’10” male at Preferred rates, while another might cap that at 215 pounds. That difference alone could save (or cost) you hundreds of dollars a year.

How Build Charts Fit Into the Bigger Pricing Picture

Your build is just one of several factors that determine your final rate. Understanding how it fits with everything else helps you see the full picture.

Age is the single biggest factor. Rates typically increase about 8% to 10% for every year you wait to apply. Health conditions, how well they are controlled, and your overall medical history also carry significant weight. Tobacco use can multiply your premium by two to four times compared to a nonsmoker. Family history of heart disease or cancer before age 60 can bump you into a less favorable class. And statistically, women generally pay less than men for the same coverage amount.

Build sits right in the middle of these factors in terms of impact. You could be in perfect health with no family history, but if your height and weight fall outside a carrier’s acceptable range for their best class, you will not get their best rate. On the flip side, being within the ideal build range does not automatically guarantee top tier pricing if other health factors are working against you.

Rating Classes and What They Mean for Your Wallet

Carriers generally group applicants into several tiers.

  • Preferred Plus or Elite offers the lowest premiums and requires excellent health, ideal build, and a clean medical history.
  • Preferred is very good and allows for minor health issues while still offering strong rates.
  • Standard Plus accommodates some health concerns and a slightly wider build range.
  • Standard reflects average health and is the baseline rate most carriers start from.
  • Table Ratings (sometimes called substandard ratings, running from Table 1 through Table 16) each add approximately 25% on top of the Standard rate.
  • Flat Extra charges add a specific dollar amount per $1,000 of coverage, often used for temporary risks.

What makes build charts so interesting is that the weight cutoffs for each class vary from carrier to carrier. A 40 year old woman who is 5’6″ and weighs 190 pounds might be rated Standard with one carrier but could qualify for Standard Plus with another. That is not a small difference. Over a 20 year term policy, the savings from one rating class improvement can easily add up to thousands of dollars.

What Happens During Underwriting

Once you submit an application, the carrier begins verifying your information through several channels.

  • Application questions cover your medical history, lifestyle, and family background.
  • MIB check reviews your history with other insurance applications.
  • Prescription database (RxCheck) reveals medications you have been prescribed, even if you did not disclose them.
  • Motor vehicle records flag any driving issues.
  • Medical exam (if required) typically includes height, weight, blood pressure, blood draw, and urine sample.
  • Attending Physician Statements (APS) are requested for more complex medical histories.

When a medical exam is involved, your height and weight are measured by a paramedical professional and compared against the carrier’s build chart. This is an objective measurement, so there is no room for estimating or rounding. What the examiner records is what the underwriter uses.

No Exam Options and How Build Charts Still Apply

You might assume that skipping the medical exam means your build does not matter. That is only partially true.

Accelerated underwriting uses data from prescription databases, motor vehicle records, and other electronic sources to make a decision without an exam. Many of these programs still ask for your height and weight on the application, and carriers cross reference that data against their build charts. Some carriers also use third party data to verify what you report.

Simplified issue policies ask a limited set of health questions and typically do not require height and weight verification, though the premiums reflect the added risk the carrier takes on.

Guaranteed issue policies ask no health questions at all and accept virtually everyone. These carry the highest premiums and usually come with a graded death benefit during the first two to three years.

The tradeoff is straightforward. Traditional underwriting with an exam generally produces the best rates for healthy applicants because the carrier has verified data to support offering you a better class. No exam options trade speed and convenience for higher premiums.

How to Get the Best Rate for Your Build

There are real strategies that can improve your outcome.

Timing matters. If you are actively working on your fitness and are close to a build chart threshold, waiting a few months to apply could bump you into a better class. However, remember that age increases of 8% to 10% per year can offset those savings, especially around birthday cutoffs. Run the numbers before deciding to wait.

Health improvements count. Some carriers will reconsider your rating class after the policy is issued if you can demonstrate sustained weight loss. This is not universal, but it is worth asking about.

Shopping multiple carriers is the single most impactful step you can take. Because every carrier maintains its own build chart with different cutoffs, the same body can qualify for very different rates across the market.

This is exactly where working with an independent agency changes the equation.

Why an Independent Agency Makes All the Difference

At Insurance by Heroes, we were founded by a former first responder and military spouse. Every member of our team comes from a background in public service, whether that means fire, police, military, EMS, or other community roles. That service first mindset shapes everything about how we work with clients.

We bring that same discipline and care to everyone we serve, regardless of your background or profession. When we help clients whose build falls outside one carrier’s preferred range, we already know which other carriers have more generous charts for that exact height and weight combination. We have seen firsthand how the same 5’11”, 240 pound applicant can get Table 2 from one company and Standard from another.

Because we are independent, we are not limited to a single carrier’s products or build charts. We shop your application across many different carriers to find the one whose underwriting guidelines match your specific profile. That comparison shopping is something a captive agent working for just one company simply cannot do.

Your Next Step

Understanding how build charts work puts you ahead of most applicants who never think about it. You now know that the same height and weight can produce very different results depending on which carrier you apply with.

The smartest move you can make is to let us run your numbers across multiple carriers before you commit to one application. We will identify which companies offer the most favorable build chart ranges for your specific height and weight, and we will walk you through your options so you can make a confident decision.

Request your free, no obligation quote today, and let our team of public service professionals put our experience to work for you. Every family deserves this level of care, and we are here to deliver it.
