Maryland Medicare Supplement Plans (2026–2027): Compare Rates
Bottom Line
Compare Maryland Medigap insurers for the same plan letter and applicant details because standardized benefits match while premiums differ. Existing Medigap policies issued in Maryland may qualify for birthday-window switches without underwriting, limited to permitted equal or lesser benefits.
Maryland Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, helps pay your share of Original Medicare bills. Start by choosing the benefits you want, then compare the same plan letter across companies and confirm your right to enroll without medical underwriting. The standardized benefits stay the same across insurers; the premiums can differ substantially.
If you also own a business and are considering an SBA loan, review life insurance for an SBA loan as a separate financing question. That decision is independent of your Medicare coverage and enrollment.
Choose your coverage before choosing a company
As you explore Medicare coverage in your state, distinguish the products: Original Medicare consists of Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance. Medigap supplements that coverage. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private plan; Medigap cannot pay its copayments or deductibles. Standalone Part D provides separate prescription coverage.
For Maryland shoppers considering broad supplemental coverage, these three options deserve a close comparison:
| Option | Main cost tradeoff | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Plan G | Covers Part A deductible, Part B coinsurance and Part B excess charges; you pay the Part B deductible. | You want fewer medical bills after paying the Part B deductible. |
| Plan N | You pay the Part B deductible, possible office and ER copays, and any Part B excess charges. | The premium difference justifies taking on those expenses. |
| High-deductible Plan G | You pay qualifying Medicare expenses until the $2,950 deductible is met in 2026 before the policy pays. | You can comfortably fund the deductible in exchange for a lower premium. |
Plan N copays are up to $20 for certain office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits without an inpatient admission. Compare high-deductible G separately from standard G.
Plans C and F remain purchase options only for people first eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Eligibility does not automatically remove underwriting requirements.
Maryland rates and companies: July 2026 examples
The Maryland Insurance Administration’s guide provides these monthly premiums for a woman age 65. For comparison, assume a Baltimore City resident who does not use tobacco, applying during initial Medigap open enrollment, without a household discount. The table preserves each insurer’s rate-category label.
| Insurer and guide category | Standard Plan G | Plan N |
|---|---|---|
| Aetna Health Insurance Company — Preferred | $261 | $169 |
| Erie Family Life Insurance Company — Non-Tobacco | $208 | $176 |
| First Care, Inc. / CareFirst MedPlus — Level 1, Baltimore Metro | $234 | $176 |
| Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company — Non-Tobacco | $242 | $171 |
These are published examples as of July 1, 2026, not personalized quotes, a statewide price range or a ranking. Confirm the premium for your address and requested effective date.
When comparing Plan G rates in Maryland, hold age, address, tobacco status, enrollment protection and discounts constant. Plan G’s standardized benefits are national; these premiums reflect Maryland filings and the stated applicant profile.
All four insurers appear on the state’s approved-policy list, revised July 31, 2026. It includes additional companies to consider. Approval is not a guarantee that every product is accepting your application.
Make sure each quote names the actual insurer and the same plan letter. Before selecting a company, check how you can reach policy service and how billing and claims are handled. A low starting premium deserves a look at renewal pricing as well.
Compare the renewal cost, too
Ask each insurer for the premium before and after discounts, discount eligibility, any application fee, and recent increases for the exact policy being quoted. Request the same effective date from every company. Discounts and underwriting can change the price.
Also identify the pricing method. Attained-age premiums rise as you age; issue-age pricing uses your age when you buy; community-rated pricing does not use age. All three can have increases for other reasons. An age-70 rate shown today is not a promise of what a current 65-year-old will pay five years from now.
For Plan N, multiply its monthly premium difference from Plan G by 12, then weigh that amount against possible copays and excess charges. Ask your providers whether they accept Medicare assignment. Choose G if avoiding those bills is worth the additional premium to you.
Know when you can buy or switch
Your first purchase
The federal Medigap open enrollment period lasts six months, beginning the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Part B. During it, insurers cannot use medical underwriting to refuse a policy they sell or charge more because of your health. Outside a protected period, an application may be declined or cost more.
Maryland also protects certain purchases before 65 because of disability: insurers offering Plans A or D to older applicants must offer the corresponding plans during the first six months after Part B enrollment, or after notice of retroactive enrollment. Do not assume every plan letter is available under this protection.
Maryland’s birthday rule
Medigap switching rights around your birthday in Maryland apply to existing Medicare Supplement policies issued in Maryland. The protected window includes your birthday and the following 30 days. You may change insurers without underwriting when moving to permitted coverage with equal or lesser benefits.
The state’s chart allows standard G to G or N, but N only to N. High-deductible G can move only to high-deductible G under this rule. A lower premium does not make a richer benefit package eligible. If underwriting previously put you above the preferred rate, Maryland also gives you a right to the preferred rate during this window.
Submit the application during the window; it does not have to finish processing then. This rule does not create a first-time Medigap purchase right for someone with only Medicare Advantage. Check your existing policy’s issue state and plan letter before applying.
Additional protections effective July 1, 2026
Maryland added protection for eligible people who lose Medicaid after being enrolled in both programs and retaining Medicaid for at least six months after Part B enrollment. The application deadline is 63 days after termination or its notice, whichever is later.
Another new protection applies to people first eligible for Medicare before 2020 who have a qualifying federal Special Enrollment Period, with an application required within 63 days after the qualifying event. Ask the state which policies and event qualify before relying on either right.
Annual Medicare open enrollment, October 15–December 7, concerns Medicare Advantage and Part D changes for the following January 1. It does not generally guarantee a Medigap purchase without underwriting. Confirm your separate Medigap protection before leaving Advantage.
When replacing Medigap, keep the old policy until you receive the new one and decide to keep it. The 30-day free-look period requires paying both premiums while both policies are in force.
Compare the complete coverage package
Add any Part A premium, the Part B premium and any Part D premium to your Medigap budget. In 2026, the standard Part B premium is $202.90 monthly, with higher premiums for some incomes. The Part B deductible is $283 annually.
Current Medigap policies do not include Part D drug coverage and generally exclude routine dental and vision care, hearing aids and long-term custodial care.
When comparing Medicare Part D plans in Maryland, enter identical prescriptions, strengths, quantities and pharmacies for each plan. Compare estimated annual drug and premium costs, then check coverage restrictions.
If you are also weighing Maryland Medicare Advantage choices by county, verify your address, doctors, hospitals and prescriptions before selecting a plan. Original Medicare offers access to providers nationwide who accept Medicare; Advantage may use networks and prior authorization.

Prepare your comparison
Gather your ZIP code, age, Part B start date, current plan letter, renewal premium, prescriptions and desired effective date. Request written quotes for the same coverage and ask which enrollment protection applies.
