No Exam Life Insurance Over 50: What You Need to Know in 2026

No-exam life insurance over 50: compare the route and the limit

You may be able to buy term life insurance after 50 without a new medical exam. Eligibility depends on the product, your age, amount of coverage and health information. Accelerated underwriting still evaluates your application and records; the insurer may request additional evidence or an exam.

No-exam term and guaranteed-issue final expense are different choices. Compare the amount, how long coverage lasts, premium and initial death benefit before choosing speed as the deciding factor.

Current age and coverage examples

Primary carrier sources reviewed October 9, 2026. The limits below describe possible underwriting routes, not guaranteed acceptance or a promise of an exam-free decision. Term length, financial justification, state and other requirements still apply.

On a small screen, swipe the comparison table sideways to read all columns.

Carrier / product Age and amount Important limitation
SBLI / term Age 50: up to $2 million through accelerated underwriting. Ages 51–60: up to $1 million. These are possible accelerated limits, not the limits for all SBLI term coverage or a guarantee of skipping an exam.
Banner Life / OPTerm Ages 50–60: up to $5 million through its stated accelerated program. Evidence from the application and records determines the route; an exam or records may still be required.
Banner Life / OPTerm Ages 61–70: up to $500,000 under its accelerated eligibility guide, with an attending physician statement required. The amount includes total coverage in force and applied for with Banner Life and William Penn. This is not a records-free route.

For ages 50–54 and 55–59, check the exact birthday: SBLI’s stated accelerated limit changes after age 50. At age 60 both examples still have an accelerated path; after 60 the Banner example has a smaller limit and requires physician records. Do not extrapolate these limits to another insurer.

Find term options for my age, amount and health. An initial quote does not confirm which underwriting route you will receive.

Three kinds of no-exam coverage

Accelerated underwriting

The insurer uses your answers and authorized evidence such as prescription history and medical information to evaluate a term application. Some applicants receive an exam-free decision; others need records or an exam. This can be a route into a term product rather than a separate, automatically more expensive policy.

Simplified issue

The application has health questions and a simplified review. It can still involve database checks. Read the actual application and product rules; there is no universal rule that it uses answers alone or approves every applicant who answers a certain way.

Guaranteed issue

Health underwriting is limited or absent for eligible applicants, but age, state and other eligibility rules remain. These are commonly smaller whole-life policies with an initial benefit limitation. Read our graded-benefit explanation before treating the face amount as the benefit payable from day one.

What to prepare before you apply

  • Your exact age, state, tobacco use, requested amount and term length.
  • Medication names, doses, reasons prescribed and treatment dates.
  • Diagnoses, recent doctor visits and the names of your treating clinicians.
  • Existing coverage and pending insurance applications.
  • The monthly premium you can maintain for the whole level period.

Answer accurately. An exam-free route does not remove the duty to disclose requested information. A referral for full underwriting does not mean guaranteed issue is your only remaining option.

Compare the offer before replacing coverage

Use the same face amount and term length for the comparison. Ask for the final underwriting class, premium, conversion deadline, available permanent conversion products and any riders you need. There is no universal no-exam surcharge; pricing depends on the product and offer.

Keep existing protection while reviewing alternatives. A quote or an application is not active coverage. Confirm the new policy’s effective date and all delivery requirements before deciding whether to replace an existing policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does no exam mean same-day approval?

No. A carrier may reach a quick decision for some cases, but records, missing information or additional underwriting can extend the process.

Can I get a large term policy after 50 without an exam?

Some current programs allow consideration for substantial amounts, as the table shows. The advertised maximum does not establish your eligibility.

How much coverage do I need?

Start with the income, debts and obligations you want to cover, then subtract resources available for that purpose. A universal minimum based only on being over 50 would not fit every household.

Compare no-exam and other term options or discuss a health history that needs individual review. For conversion shopping, see our named convertible-term comparison.
