Final Expense Insurance Rates: 2026 Cost Guide

Bottom Line

Final expense premiums depend on age, coverage amount, tobacco use, health history and the insurer. Choose a payment you can sustain, and check benefit timing: guaranteed issue policies commonly limit natural-death payouts during the first two years.

Request final expense insurance quotes

Compare final expense insurance rates after estimating the expenses you want funded and subtracting resources already available. The payment needs to fit your budget, and the policy’s benefits need to fit that gap. For a separate lifelong coverage need, our guide to guaranteed universal life rates explains the guarantee and payment structure of that alternative.

Final expense commonly refers to smaller whole life insurance intended for final bills. Coverage amounts, eligibility and benefit schedules vary. Check the premium guarantee, exclusions and payment requirements instead of treating the label as an unconditional lifelong payout promise.

Why the Price Varies So Much

Different quotes may reflect different products or assumptions. Compare the same applicant information, benefit amount, payment frequency and initial payout schedule before treating a price difference as a saving.

Insurance By Heroes can help compare the products available through our agency. Ask which insurers were considered and why a recommendation fits your coverage need, application circumstances and budget.

An agent representing one insurer may offer several of its products; an independent agency can compare the insurers it represents. Neither channel guarantees the lowest price, and an independent comparison does not necessarily include the entire market. Ask for the written offers and the assumptions used.

Breaking Down 2026 Funeral Costs

Obtain current itemized local prices for your preferred arrangements before selecting an insurance amount. Our Affordable Final Expense Insurance review can help weigh the premium against benefits and limitations, rather than assuming a national funeral figure describes your own costs.

NFDA’s 2023 national price study reported a median of $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial, or $9,995 with a vault. Cemetery, monument and certain other charges are excluded. Those are historical medians, not 2026 local quotes and not an all-in cemetery budget.

The same study reported $6,280 for a funeral with viewing and cremation. Direct cremation without a viewing or ceremony is a different purchase; get a provider’s written total for the services you select. Our Cheap final expense insurance guide considers the coverage tradeoffs alongside the premium.

List other bills or support you want funded separately, then check existing insurance and savings committed to those needs. Avoid counting the same resource twice or assuming the entire death benefit is available only for funeral costs.

The Two Main Types of Final Expense Policies

You’ll generally run into two versions of this coverage: Simplified Issue and Guaranteed Issue.

Simplified Issue uses health information without a routine exam. Aflac’s current final expense product, for example, requires health questions but no medical exam. Check the actual offer’s level or modified benefits, effective-date conditions and exclusions. Approval or a first payment alone does not establish an unrestricted full claim.

Guaranteed Issue does not use health questions but has other eligibility requirements. Gerber’s current offer has age, residency and application restrictions, including an exclusion when a power of attorney or guardianship exists on an adult proposed insured. It generally limits early non-accidental death benefits to 110% of earned premiums during the first two years, subject to state and contract terms. Check the actual product rather than assuming age alone ensures acceptance.

An agent can help identify products to check. A diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility or a preferred price, and a preliminary quote is not an underwriting decision. Provide the accurate information each application requests.

What Determines Your Monthly Rate?

Age can affect a new policy’s price and eligibility. United of Omaha’s Washington guaranteed whole life rate chart, effective August 1, 2026, lists $10,000 monthly premiums at age 50 of $42.81 for a male and $32.46 for a female; at age 65, $70.07 and $56.23; and at age 80, $166.52 and $128.44. This guaranteed-issue offer has reduced natural-death benefits during its first two years. These are one state’s published product rates, not national averages or medically underwritten quotes. Our Final Expense Insurance rates guide provides related comparison questions.

A schedule may use male and female classifications. Tobacco or nicotine rules depend on the product and the application’s definitions; disclose the use requested. The guaranteed-issue Washington chart above does not use a separate tobacco rate category.

For a medically underwritten product, review the application’s questions about diagnoses, prescriptions and treatment. Insurers may review additional information authorized by the application. Do not infer a decision from the name of one medication; genuine guaranteed issue does not use a medical health class.

When an agent recommends another insurer, ask what current product guidance or case-specific response supports that choice. Compare offers using a consistent health summary and benefit assumptions.

Common Health Conditions and Coverage

A chronic condition does not determine every insurer’s response. Confirm the actual application requirements and accurately report the requested condition, treatment and timing information.

For diabetes, a past heart attack or stroke, COPD or oxygen use, check the insurer’s actual questions. There is no universal two-year threshold or diagnosis-only rule for preferred rates. Our $15,000 final expense insurance rates guide can help compare a specific benefit amount with the application and benefit terms.

Ask for written premiums, the policy form and initial benefit schedule, and identify what remains subject to review. A quote is useful for comparison only when its assumptions and status are clear.

How Much Coverage Should You Actually Buy?

Choose the face amount from the funding gap rather than a standard funeral-insurance package. Our $25,000 final expense insurance quotes guide discusses that larger benefit; compare it with the expenses and other resources in your own plan.

Use current local funeral, cemetery and other prices. There is no single $12,000–$15,000 burial or $7,000–$10,000 cremation amount that safely covers every family. An initial limited benefit can leave a gap even when the face amount matches the budget.

Test the required premium against your ongoing budget, including a lower-income year. A larger amount is not useful if payments cannot be maintained. Check the actual guarantee and lapse provisions before comparing a smaller sustainable policy with a larger one.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Check when coverage and its initial benefit period actually begin. The cited United of Omaha application requires issuance and the first premium to be received during the insured’s lifetime. Signing paperwork alone does not start every policy or guarantee its full benefit.

Age and health can change, but a birthday is not a universal automatic premium increase and future health is not certain. Decide from a current need and eligible offer, understanding any coverage gap while you consider the options.

Ask which insurers and products were compared, the reasons behind the recommendation and what alternatives remain available through other channels. A comparison should explain the price and benefit differences without promising the lowest market rate.

Discuss the intended arrangements and funding with the people who may handle them. Keep policy documents, beneficiary details and any prepaid-plan information accessible so existing resources can be identified when needed.

Before buying, verify issuance and effective-date requirements, exclusions and the initial payout schedule. Check what an existing policy already provides and what would be lost in a replacement. An agent comparison does not guarantee approval or payment of every final bill.
