AARP Medicare Supplement Review (2026–2027): Rates & Discounts

Bottom Line

AARP Medigap from UnitedHealthcare may be competitive after discounts, but equivalent plan benefits match other insurers. Include required AARP membership dues and check your policy's discount schedule: shrinking discounts can raise your bill without a base-rate increase.

Get help comparing Medigap rates

AARP Medicare Supplement coverage from UnitedHealthcare is worth shortlisting when its premium after discounts is competitive and remains affordable as discounts decline. Compare the same plan letter across insurers: the AARP endorsement does not change standardized Medigap benefits. Your decision should turn on the written rate, discount schedule, service evidence and extras you will actually use.

If you are also reviewing life insurance for your family or estate, compare guaranteed universal life rates as a separate coverage and budgeting decision. Life insurance is not a Medicare benefit or enrollment requirement.

Who insures AARP Medicare Supplement plans?

AARP endorses these policies and receives royalty fees; it is not the insurer. Coverage comes from UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company or another named UnitedHealthcare insurer, such as UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company of America. Check the legal insurer on your quote. AARP membership is required to enroll, so include membership dues in your budget.

Medicare Supplement and Medigap mean the same thing: insurance that helps pay your share of Original Medicare Part A hospital and Part B medical costs. Medicare Advantage is a different way to receive Medicare benefits; Medigap does not cover its copays. New Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage, which you can obtain through a separate, standalone Part D plan.

As you explore Medicare insurer reviews and comparisons, identify the product first. A company’s Advantage plan and its Supplement policy require different comparisons.

What do UnitedHealthcare Medigap rates cost in 2026?

There is no single nationwide AARP rate. Location, plan, discounts and any applicable underwriting affect the price. You also continue paying your Part B premium separately.

For a concrete example, Maryland’s July 1, 2026 guide lists these UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company monthly base rates for non-tobacco applicants age 65 and older, before listed discounts:

Swipe the table to compare all columns.
Standard plan Female base rate Male base rate
Plan G $375 $423
Plan N $312 $352

These are dated Maryland reference rates, not individualized quotes or nationwide prices. Different rating tiers also appear in the guide.

To obtain a usable quote, provide your ZIP code, birth date, tobacco status, Medicare Part B start date and requested coverage date. Ask which rating class applies and whether the price already includes every discount. Compare the annual premium as well as the monthly bill.

The figures here concern 2026. For a 2027 start date, request documents and a quote applicable to that date.

Which discounts should you check?

Request the rules for your state and exact policy. Current documents show why one advertised percentage cannot be applied everywhere.

  • Enrollment discount: Maryland lists 39% at ages 65–68, 36% at 69, then reductions of three percentage points annually until zero at 81. Applicants enrolling within six months of turning 65 or a later Part B effective date qualify for the program; later applicants face separate conditions.
  • Multi-insured discount: Maryland lists 10% for qualifying insureds sharing one account with eligible AARP group coverage.
  • Different state terms: UnitedHealthcare’s 2026 Wisconsin enrollment kit instead specifies a 7% multi-insured discount when two insureds share one account and AARP membership number, with each holding eligible AARP-branded supplemental coverage from UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company.
  • Payment discounts: That Wisconsin kit lists $2 off monthly premiums through electronic funds transfer, or $24 off for paying the full 12-month premium. Those two payment discounts cannot be combined.

Also ask whether a separate household discount is offered, what relationship or residency conditions apply, and which discounts can be combined. Do not assume that sharing an address automatically qualifies you.

A shrinking discount can raise your bill even without a base-rate increase. Hypothetical calculation: a $300 base premium with a 30% discount costs $210. With a 27% discount, it costs $219—about 4.3% more. These invented figures illustrate the math; they are not available rates.

Ask for the rating method and recent rate changes for the same state, legal insurer and policy. A community-rated label is not a promise that your bill will stay flat. Medicare notes that Medigap premiums typically increase over time.

Plan G, Plan N or an existing Plan F?

Choose the benefits before judging the carrier’s price. Standard Plan G and Plan N differ in what you pay for Part B services:

Swipe the table to compare all columns.
Part B cost Standard Plan G Plan N
Annual deductible You pay it You pay it
Coinsurance after the deductible Covered Covered, except specified copays
Office and emergency room copays No Plan N-style copays Up to $20 for some office visits; up to $50 for ER visits without inpatient admission
Excess charges Covered Not covered

These are selected benefits; premiums and services outside Medicare and your policy remain additional expenses. The Part B deductible is $283 in 2026.

Plan G deserves consideration if you prefer fewer bills for covered Part B care. Consider Plan N when its annual premium savings justify potential copays and uncovered excess charges. Ask your doctors whether they accept Medicare assignment before evaluating that tradeoff.

For existing Plan F owners, comparing Plan F and Plan G costs starts with the deductible: standard Plan F covers it; standard Plan G does not. Plan F is unavailable to people first eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. In 2026, annual Plan G premium savings exceeding $283 would offset paying the full Part B deductible. Switching eligibility is a separate question.

Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin standardize Medigap differently, so use their state-specific benefit descriptions.

With Original Medicare, you can use doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare nationwide. That provider flexibility comes from Original Medicare. Check whether a quote is for Medicare SELECT, which can impose provider restrictions for full benefits.

Are wellness extras worth paying for?

Some UnitedHealthcare Supplement options include Renew Active gym access and dental, vision and hearing discounts. These services are separate from insured Medigap benefits, depend on location and may be discontinued. A dental discount is not dental insurance.

Where options with and without extras are offered, compare their actual premiums. Confirm participation with your preferred gym or provider. Value extras according to spending they would realistically replace; an unused gym membership does not justify a higher premium.

How does it compare with other companies?

When choosing a company for your Medigap policy, compare available premiums, discount duration, recent rate history and documented service or complaint information. Medicare recommends checking insurer complaints with your state insurance department.

Request Mutual of Omaha Medigap rates and discounts for the same plan letter and applicant profile, confirming availability and discount eligibility before treating it as an alternative.

Check Medicare Supplement options from Aetna separately from its Medicare Advantage offerings, and confirm which Supplement policies are sold in your state.

When comparing Mutual of Omaha and AARP Medigap, keep the location, age, tobacco status, plan letter and coverage date identical. Ask each insurer to show both the initial premium and scheduled discount changes. Neither brand is automatically the better value.

Confirm your enrollment rights before switching

Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months, beginning the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Part B. During it, insurers cannot deny a policy they sell or charge more because of health problems. Outside that period, underwriting may apply unless you have a guaranteed issue right or additional state protection.

The October 15–December 7 annual enrollment window concerns Medicare Advantage and Part D changes. It does not generally guarantee Medigap acceptance without underwriting.

State exceptions matter. People with Medigap policies issued in Maryland can apply to switch to equal or lesser benefits without underwriting on their birthday and during the following 30 days. That is a Maryland protection, not a nationwide rule.

Prepare your coverage dates, current policy, budget and prescription list. Request written quotes for equivalent coverage, including each discount’s conditions and expiration schedule, and price standalone Part D separately. Before replacing coverage, confirm acceptance and coordinate effective dates. Choose the combination you can afford beyond the introductory premium.
