Medicare Insurance Companies: Reviews and Comparisons

Choose a Medicare insurance company by first choosing the coverage you need, then comparing equivalent options where you live. For Medigap, compare the same benefits and your actual premium. For Medicare Advantage, prioritize doctors, prescriptions and medical costs. For standalone Part D, compare the yearly cost of your medications at pharmacies you can use.

This guide examines Mutual of Omaha, AARP-branded UnitedHealthcare coverage, Aetna, Humana and Wellcare using primary sources checked September 16, 2026. It does not assign a nationwide winner or present personalized quotes.

Compare the right kind of coverage

Original Medicare consists of Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance. Private insurers sell different products that work with Medicare; a company name alone does not identify your coverage.

Swipe the table to compare all columns.
Product What you are buying Most useful comparison
Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap Insurance that helps pay your share of Original Medicare costs Equivalent benefits, premiums, discounts and eligibility
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C A private plan providing your Part A and Part B benefits, usually with Part D included Local providers, drug coverage, cost sharing and plan rules
Standalone Part D Separate prescription drug coverage, commonly paired with Original Medicare Your drug list, pharmacy options and total annual cost

Medigap cannot pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing. Newly sold Medigap policies also do not include prescription drug coverage, so compare Part D separately when building an Original Medicare package.

Original Medicare lets you use providers who take Medicare throughout the United States. Advantage plans may require network providers for non-emergency care. If you split your time between states, that distinction deserves attention before comparing premiums.

To join Medicare Advantage, you need both Parts A and B and must live in the plan’s service area. Standalone Part D requires Part A or Part B, plus residence in the service area.

Medicare Supplement companies: compare equivalent policies

When comparing Medicare Supplement insurance companies, hold the plan letter, deductible version and applicant details constant. Standardized policies with the same letter have the same core benefits across insurers. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use different standardization systems.

Choose the benefits before choosing the insurer. For example, standard Plan G covers Part B excess charges; Plan N does not. Both leave the Part B deductible to you. Plan N also has copays of up to $20 for certain office visits and up to $50 for emergency visits without inpatient admission. Compare the premium difference against those costs.

Mutual of Omaha

Make the actual policy and price the center of your Mutual of Omaha Medigap review. The company’s Plan N description confirms the remaining deductible, visit copays and lack of excess-charge coverage. It also advertises wellness discounts, but identifies those services as noninsurance offerings that may be discontinued. Treat them as extras when comparing another insurer’s Plan N with the same applicant profile.

AARP-branded UnitedHealthcare coverage

An AARP UnitedHealthcare Medigap review needs to distinguish the endorsement from the insurer: AARP endorses the policies, while a UnitedHealthcare insurance company issues them. AARP membership is required to enroll. Identify the issuing company and applicable state terms on your proposal, and include membership expense when comparing your initial budget. This Medigap purchase is separate from UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage.

Aetna

State availability is the first checkpoint in an Aetna Medicare Supplement review. Aetna lists several standardized options, including G and N, but expressly says plans are unavailable in some states and regions. Request your state’s Outline of Coverage and a current quote before shortlisting it. Evaluate this policy against equivalent Medigap coverage; Aetna’s Advantage networks and advertised extras do not describe its Supplement policy.

What makes one quote better?

For Mutual of Omaha versus AARP Medigap, request the same plan letter and deductible version, ZIP code, effective date, age, tobacco status and other applicable rating details. Ask each insurer for:

  • The premium before and after discounts, including household or payment-method conditions.
  • Whether pricing changes as you age and whether any introductory discount declines.
  • Recent approved rate changes for the exact issuing company and policy form, where available.
  • The final premium and acceptance terms after any required underwriting.

Also check whether the quote is for Medicare SELECT, which may require particular providers. Examine how the price is set and which discounts apply. Premiums can rise; past increases cannot establish a future price.

For a state-specific benchmark, Maryland publishes a rate guide dated July 1, 2026. It contains filed premiums and explains age-based and community rating. Its figures are informational and subject to change, not a personalized offer or a national price comparison.

Medicare Advantage companies: review the local plan

Start with the exact plan name, identification number, county and coverage year. A $0 plan premium does not eliminate your Part B premium obligation or medical cost sharing. Advantage plans have annual limits on covered medical spending, but the limits and service costs differ.

Humana

A Humana Medicare Advantage review should begin with a plan available in your county. Humana’s 2026 product page describes routine dental, vision and hearing coverage. Before assigning those benefits value, examine the local plan’s covered services, allowances, participating providers and restrictions. A dental benefit is useful only if it helps pay for the care you need with a dentist you can use.

Aetna

Network flexibility is a key question in an Aetna Medicare Advantage review. Aetna’s 2026 HMO-POS description generally requires network providers for medical care while allowing out-of-network routine dental care. Do not read “POS” as unrestricted medical access. Check the specific plan’s doctors, prescriptions and costs separately from any Aetna Medigap quote.

UnitedHealthcare

Use a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage review to examine a specific local plan, separately from AARP-branded Medigap. UnitedHealthcare offers several Advantage plan types and states that availability, benefits and provider networks vary by area. Check your specialist and hospital under the exact plan name; recognizing the insurer’s name at a medical office is insufficient.

Put the finalists through the same comparison

Compare Humana versus UnitedHealthcare Advantage plans using the same county, coverage year, providers and drug list. Apply the same checks to Aetna or another available alternative:

Swipe the table to compare all columns.
Check Evidence to collect
Access to care Confirm each doctor and hospital with the plan and provider office
Expected expenses Price your regular visits, tests, therapy and medications
A year with substantial care Review hospitalization costs and applicable medical out-of-pocket limits
Coverage restrictions Read referral, prior-authorization and out-of-network rules
Extra benefits Check annual allowances, exclusions and usable providers

Use the Summary of Benefits for an initial comparison and the Evidence of Coverage for detailed terms. Medicare identifies network use, service frequency, extra benefits and annual spending limits as factors affecting your costs.

Wellcare and SilverScript: compare prescription costs

The useful question for Wellcare versus SilverScript Part D plans is which available plan covers your prescriptions at the lowest acceptable total cost, with workable pharmacy access and coverage rules.

Wellcare sells standalone Part D coverage. SilverScript is part of Aetna; its 2026 offering is SilverScript Choice. Aetna lists that product in 49 states and Washington, D.C., excluding Oklahoma. Verify your own location before building a comparison.

Enter each drug’s name, strength, quantity and refill frequency, then compare the same pharmacies and supply lengths. Medicare’s comparison tools estimate monthly and yearly costs using your prescriptions. Review annual premiums plus expected drug spending; the lowest premium alone does not answer the question.

Check prior authorization, quantity limits and step therapy, which can require trying another drug first. Resolve a necessary medication’s coverage before enrolling.

For 2026, Part D deductibles cannot exceed $615, and qualifying out-of-pocket spending on covered Part D drugs is capped at $2,100. Premiums remain separate. This protection does not make an uncovered prescription covered or replace an Advantage plan’s medical spending limit.

How to judge reviews and service claims

This comparison uses Medicare/CMS rules, insurer product disclosures and a state regulator’s rate guide. It evaluates coverage fit, access, cost exposure and enrollment conditions. No personalized quotes, provider confirmations or prescription-cost searches were performed, so no carrier earns a price or service ranking here.

For Advantage and Part D, examine the CMS Star Rating attached to the relevant contract and rating year, including member-experience measures. A companywide advertising claim should not substitute for the contract you are considering.

For Medigap service comparisons, request complaint information for the issuing insurer and relevant product from your state insurance department. Check the reporting period and whether results account for company size before drawing conclusions.

Check enrollment rights before switching

Fall open enrollment runs October 15–December 7. Changes made in fall 2026 generally take effect January 1, 2027. Compare 2027 documents for that decision; a 2026 benefit description is not evidence of next year’s coverage.

Annual Medicare open enrollment does not generally guarantee you can buy Medigap without medical underwriting. The federal six-month Medigap enrollment period begins the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Part B. Outside protected situations, acceptance and pricing may depend on health. State laws can provide additional rights, including different opportunities for people under 65.

People already in Medicare Advantage also have a January 1–March 31 window to change Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare and join Part D. Other enrollment opportunities depend on eligibility and circumstances. Verify your applicable window and any needed Medigap acceptance before arranging a switch.

Prepare a comparison you can act on

Gather your ZIP code and county, Medicare effective dates, current coverage, doctors, prescriptions, pharmacies and monthly budget. Choose two or three available alternatives.

For Medigap, request dated written quotes for equivalent policies with all discounts identified. For Advantage or Part D, save the exact plan identifiers, coverage year, cost estimates and documents. Choose the policy that best meets your requirements for affordable ongoing premiums, usable coverage and expenses you could manage when care increases.
