Humana Medicare Advantage Review (2026–2027): Costs & Networks

Bottom Line

Humana Medicare Advantage may fit if the local plan covers your doctors and medicines affordably. Compare likely care charges and medical spending limits; for nonemergency care, PPO coverage does not require a noncontracted doctor to accept you.

Get help comparing Medicare Advantage plans

Humana Medicare Advantage deserves a place on your shortlist if the specific local plan covers your essential providers and prescriptions at costs you can manage. Judge the plan by its medical spending limit, charges for likely care, and network rules. A low premium alone does not establish good value.

If you are also considering permanent life insurance, comparing IUL companies is a separate decision about life coverage, with no role in Medicare benefits or enrollment.

Start with the exact plan and coverage year

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is a private-plan way to receive your Part A hospital and Part B medical benefits; most plans include Part D prescription coverage. Medigap, or Medicare Supplement, helps pay costs under Original Medicare and cannot cover Advantage copays. A standalone Part D plan provides drug coverage separately.

As you explore Medicare insurer reviews and comparisons, compare the same product type, county and year. Record each candidate’s complete plan name, contract number, plan number and segment.

The figures below describe 2026 coverage. For coverage beginning January 2027, use 2027 documents. Current members should read their Annual Notice of Change, which explains changes taking effect in January.

What Humana costs: two local examples

Humana’s 2026 Evidence of Coverage documents list Washtenaw County, Michigan, within the service areas of both PPOs below. These published terms illustrate two local options. Confirm current availability and complete your provider and prescription checks before applying.

2026 cost Humana Value Plus H5216-382-000 Humana Full Access H7617-052-000
Monthly plan premium $8.80 $0
Primary care office visit, in or out of network 20% coinsurance $0 copay
Specialist office visit, in or out of network 20% coinsurance $40 copay
Inpatient hospital, in or out of network $2,185 per stay $440 daily for days 1–6; $0 daily for days 7–90
Annual medical maximum, in network $9,250 $5,650
Annual medical maximum, combined in and out of network $13,900 $5,650

Office-visit cost sharing applies after any applicable medical deductible. Read the eligibility, coverage and authorization conditions alongside these figures.

On these measures, Full Access has the lower premium and medical ceiling. Its daily hospital charges create a different tradeoff from Value Plus’s per-stay charge. The better value depends on your doctors, medicines and expected care.

Build a total-cost budget

A $0 Advantage premium does not eliminate your Part B premium. The standard Part B premium is $202.90 monthly in 2026; higher-income beneficiaries may pay more. Account for any verified plan premium reduction or assistance separately.

Prepare two budgets:

  • Expected year: premiums plus anticipated doctor visits, prescriptions, tests, therapy and other care.
  • High-use year: premiums plus the applicable medical out-of-pocket limit, with drugs and expenses outside that limit budgeted separately.

Include outpatient surgery, advanced imaging, ambulance services, rehabilitation and Part B drugs in your review. A low office copay tells you little about those charges.

The medical maximum limits qualifying Part A and Part B cost sharing. Part D uses a separate limit: in 2026, after qualifying out-of-pocket spending reaches $2,100, you pay nothing further for covered Part D drugs that year. Premiums and uncovered drugs are separate expenses.

Will your doctors actually be available?

Start with Humana’s plan-specific provider directory, then confirm participation with both Humana and the provider’s billing office. Ask about the exact plan, year, office address and whether the practice accepts new patients. A statement that an office “takes Humana” is too broad for this decision.

Check your primary doctor, specialists, preferred hospital, laboratory, imaging center, rehabilitation providers and equipment suppliers. Include providers where you spend part of the year. Humana identifies its directory as the source for current network participants.

If a must-keep provider cannot be accessed affordably, remove the plan from your shortlist even if its premium or dental allowance looks attractive.

HMO versus PPO access

With an HMO, routine care generally stays within the network. Exceptions include emergency care, out-of-area urgent care and temporary out-of-area dialysis. An HMO-POS may cover specified services outside the network; read which services qualify.

A PPO generally allows covered care outside its network, often at greater cost, and does not require specialist referrals. Still, confirm coverage before scheduling nonemergency out-of-network treatment.

PPO coverage also does not compel a noncontracted doctor to treat you. Humana’s EOC states that such providers generally have no obligation to accept members except in emergencies.

Separate referrals from prior authorization. A referral concerns access to a specialist; prior authorization is the plan’s approval for a service or supply. Even a plan without referral requirements can require prior authorization. Check upcoming procedures before enrolling.

If a provider leaves

Deciding what to do when your doctor leaves the network starts with confirming the departure date, remaining access and any temporary arrangements for ongoing treatment. Ask about replacement providers and the costs of continuing outside the network.

Ask Medicare whether an enrollment opportunity applies before selecting a replacement plan. Significant network changes can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period on a case-by-case basis; one departure does not establish that right automatically.

Compare prescriptions and dental coverage

Enter every medication’s name, strength, quantity and refill schedule when comparing plans. Check the formulary, drug tier, pharmacy and annual estimated cost. Review prior authorization, step therapy and quantity limits for the actual prescription.

If you want Part D coverage with a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO, select one that includes it; you cannot add a standalone Part D plan to those plan types.

When checking Medicare Advantage dental benefits, compare covered procedures, annual benefit limits, frequency limits, dentist networks and your share of the bill. Humana says supplemental dental coverage varies by plan. For planned crowns or dentures, ask the dentist for procedure codes and request a benefit estimate before making dental coverage the deciding factor.

Compare Humana with other local options

If available in your county, assess Aetna Medicare Advantage doctors and drug coverage using the same provider and medication lists. Evaluate those Advantage options separately from Medigap.

Apply the same test to UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage costs and networks. Keep AARP-branded Medigap policies in a separate comparison because they work with Original Medicare.

To judge Humana and UnitedHealthcare Advantage plan differences, hold the county, coverage year, providers and drugs constant. Compare expected annual spending, high-use exposure, travel access and authorization requirements before considering extras. No carrier wins that comparison for every buyer.

Confirm enrollment rights and prepare your comparison

You need both Part A and Part B for Medicare Advantage and must live in the plan’s service area. Annual open enrollment runs October 15–December 7 for coverage starting January 1. Initial and Special Enrollment Periods may also apply.

During January 1–March 31, current Advantage members can make one change to another Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add standalone Part D. The change takes effect the month after the plan receives the request.

If Original Medicare plus Medigap is your alternative, check your purchase rights first. Annual Medicare open enrollment does not generally guarantee Medigap acceptance without medical underwriting. Federal protections depend on your circumstances, and states may provide additional rights.

For your next step, gather your ZIP code and county, Medicare start dates, provider list, prescriptions, pharmacy preferences and current plan documents. Use Medicare’s comparison tools to identify local candidates and estimate drug costs. Then complete provider confirmations and compare both budgets. Choose only after you can explain how the plan fits your care and what you could owe in a difficult year.
