Best Medicare Supplement Companies for Your Budget (2026–2027)
Bottom Line
Choose Medigap benefits first, then compare insurers' discounted premiums, renewal pricing and support: paying more doesn't expand the same standardized plan's core coverage. Include AARP membership costs for its UnitedHealthcare Medigap plans, and confirm underwriting before switching.
The best Medicare Supplement company for your budget offers the plan you want at a premium you can sustain, with support you can use. Start with the plan letter: insurers selling the same standardized Medigap plan provide the same core benefits. Paying more for Plan G does not buy broader standardized Plan G coverage.
If you also own a business and are considering SBA financing, life insurance for an SBA loan is a separate planning question to discuss with your lender. Keep that business need separate from your Medicare coverage decision.
How we compared these companies
This guide compares Mutual of Omaha, AARP Medicare Supplement plans insured by UnitedHealthcare, and State Farm. The scope is three selected carriers, published Maryland rate examples, and documented service information—not a nationwide price survey or a complete market ranking.
Our criteria are the premium after applicable discounts, how pricing can change, the support available, and whether you can obtain the policy. The service evidence includes published support options and a carrier-commissioned survey; it does not establish a customer-service winner.
Research was checked September 16, 2026. Dollar benchmarks concern 2026 coverage; request new rates for a 2027 start date.
As you explore Medicare insurer reviews and comparisons, keep each company’s Supplement, Medicare Advantage and standalone Part D products separate.
Choose the coverage before the company
Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, helps pay your share of costs under Original Medicare: Part A for hospital coverage and Part B for medical coverage. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive Medicare benefits; Medigap cannot cover its copayments. New Medigap policies exclude prescription drug coverage. With Original Medicare, you can obtain it through a standalone Part D plan.
For a practical starting point, compare these choices:
| Plan | Main cost tradeoff | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Plan G | You pay the Part B deductible; Plan G covers Part B excess charges. | You want fewer bills for covered medical cost sharing. |
| Plan N | You pay the Part B deductible, up to $20 for some office visits, and up to $50 for emergency room visits without inpatient admission. Excess charges are not covered. | The quoted premium reduction justifies those additional costs. |
| High-deductible Plan G | In 2026, you must pay $2,950 in qualifying Medicare cost sharing before the policy pays. | You can fund that deductible and want to compare lower-premium options. |
The Part B deductible is $283 in 2026. Compare that amount with the high-deductible Plan G amount before choosing a lower monthly premium.
For G versus N, multiply the monthly premium difference by 12. Compare that annual difference with possible Plan N copayments and your comfort with excess charges.
Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use different Medigap standardization systems. Residents should compare their state’s coverage options instead of applying this lettered-plan table directly.
Dated rates: a Maryland budget comparison
These benchmarks use Maryland’s July 1, 2026 rate guide: a 65-year-old woman, non-tobacco rates, initial Medigap open enrollment, and no household or multi-insured discount.
| Insurer | Standard Plan G monthly | Plan N monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company | $242 | $171 |
| UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company, AARP plans | $228.75, calculated | $190.32, calculated |
| State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company | $219 | $166 |
The UHC figures are illustrative calculations using the guide’s female base rates and 39% early-enrollment discount: $375 × 61% and $312 × 61%. That discount later decreases with age.
State Farm has the lowest benchmark in this three-company example. Other insurers or discount eligibility could change the result. These are dated benchmarks, not personalized offers.
Which company belongs on your shortlist?
Mutual of Omaha: check the final discounted premium
Review Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement costs for the same plan letter and applicant profile as the alternatives. Ask whether your household qualifies for a discount, what documentation is needed, and what happens if your living arrangement changes.
Mutual’s Medicare Supplement website identifies a US-based customer-care team. That is useful information about its support operation, but it does not establish a comparative advantage in wait times or resolving billing problems.
Consider it when the final quote is competitive and you are comfortable with the renewal pricing explanation. A discount percentage alone is not enough to choose a policy.
AARP/UnitedHealthcare: examine membership and discount terms
AARP Medicare Supplement rates and discounts require a separate review from UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage offers. AARP endorses the Supplement product, UnitedHealthcare insures it, and AARP membership is required. Include any membership dues in your budget and ask how enrollment discounts change over time.
For service evidence, a Human8 survey commissioned by UnitedHealthcare included 1,110 Medigap members and was fielded in March–April 2025. In it, 92% agreed that UnitedHealthcare consistently provided reliable support when needed. This reports surveyed members’ experience; it does not compare competing insurers.
Consider this option when its net premium and future discount schedule fit your budget, rather than assuming the AARP name guarantees the lowest price.
State Farm: consider the local-agent support route
State Farm is worth considering if you want an agent’s office to help with paperwork. Its health insurance page says customers can bring bills to an agent’s office for claim filing and seek an agent’s help with policy changes. Those are documented assistance options, not a guarantee about claim outcomes.
Before choosing, ask the specific office who handles Medicare Supplement billing questions and how follow-up works. Confirm that the quoted policy is State Farm’s Medigap product.
When comparing Mutual of Omaha and AARP Medigap, hold the plan letter, ZIP code, applicant profile and effective date constant. Put the legal insurer name, base premium, discounts and final premium beside each other.
Budget for renewals as well as the first month
Understanding what affects Medicare Supplement premiums helps you judge whether a starting price is sustainable. Location, plan choice, tobacco status, qualifying discounts and medical underwriting can affect pricing.
Ask which pricing method applies:
- Attained age: Your current age affects the premium, so aging can increase it.
- Issue age: Pricing uses your age when you buy; later birthdays do not themselves increase the premium.
- Community rated: The base premium is not tied to your age.
All three can have increases for other reasons. Ask for the policy’s last three years of rate changes and any scheduled discount reductions. Past increases are context, not a forecast.
Keep your Part B premium and any standalone Part D premium in the budget alongside Medigap. A Supplement premium alone does not represent your full Medicare spending.
Confirm your right to buy or switch
Your federal Medigap open enrollment lasts six months, beginning the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Part B. During that period, health conditions cannot be used to deny a policy or charge more. Outside it, underwriting may apply unless you have a guaranteed issue right or another applicable protection.
Annual Medicare open enrollment does not generally create a new right to buy Medigap without underwriting. Confirm eligibility before planning a switch based on a lower advertised premium.
State protections can differ. For example, someone with a policy issued in Maryland can apply to change to equal or lesser benefits without underwriting during a window including their birthday and the following 30 days. Switching insurers is allowed. This is a Maryland rule.
Before canceling existing coverage, obtain written acceptance, the replacement’s effective date and an explanation of any waiting period.
Prepare a comparison you can act on
To compare personalized Medigap quotes, prepare your ZIP code, date of birth, tobacco status, Part B effective date, desired coverage date and current coverage information. Have household details ready for discount questions.
Request the same plan from at least three insurers available where you live. For each, record:
- The premium before and after discounts, plus any membership cost.
- The exact policy type, including whether it is standard, high-deductible or Medicare SELECT.
- Underwriting requirements, any waiting period and the effective date.
- Renewal pricing information and the contact route for billing problems.
Medicare SELECT can restrict which providers you use for full benefits, so identify it before treating a lower premium as equivalent.
Choose the plan’s cost sharing first, then compare written offers for that coverage. Favor the premium you can sustain, discount terms you understand and support route you are comfortable using.
